IMH gives highly acclaimed program in San Diego
Dr. Susan Carpenter, Director of Intergenerational and Community Programming for the IMH was in San Diego early May giving music workshops in libraries across the county for the IMH. The workshops specifically for care givers were part of a month long Learning Festival sponsored by the Aging and Independence Services of San Diego. The festival is part of Older Americans Month which is being celebrated across the country.
Over fifty older adults attended and participated in singing during the presentation at the opening of the Learning Festival on April 30th. A training workshop was also given for members of ‘Legacy Corps’, an innovative care giver respite program involving older adult volunteers and at risk youth. Legacy Corps was developed in partnership with the University of Maryland’s Center on Aging and the Corporation for National and Community Services’ AmeriCorps. All Legacy Corps members who attended the training were extremely responsive to using music within their respite work, and each received a copy of Music and Care Giving: Ten Tips for Care Givers written by Dr. Carpenter.
Judith Joffe, Manager of Community Programs with AIS wrote: “Thank you for reintroducing our community to music and demonstrating what a powerful experience it can be in bringing people together.” The IMH look forward to contributing to AIS programs in the future.
